          aakula n-eera piRa' kuRaL 34

         Purity of mind is righteousness personified;

         other formats are but hollow sounds

ThiruvaLLuvar has used the expression 'emphazise' (valiyuRuththal) only once to impress the importance of virtues and righteous ways of life. In our lives this means discipline, veracity, purity, sociability, munificense, humanism, love, sublimity, grace, penance in thoughts, words and actions. It is hard to find exact equvalents to thamizh words like 'aRam', 'maanam', 'naaNam'. In foreign languages and customs 'aRam' is equated to 'tharmam', that is giving alms. The word 'aRam' possesses great latitude, signifying various virtures, moral rights, merits, legal duties, positive approaches and ordained by social customs and traditions, In our culture, codes of virutue are common to all and evey one in the society. But according to Bhagavat Gita and the codes of Manu, virtue and discipline vary according to the four divisions of discriminative caste systems enforced in the name of occupations defined for each section of society. The phrace 'aakula neera', metaphorically renders ostentation and hypocirsy, besides vocal mock heroism.
