The Hindu CARE: An injured bull being given medical attention at the Blue Cross of India's animal shelter in Velachery on Thursday.Blue Cross of India rescued 34 bulls that were packed in a lorry and being transported to Kerala at midnight on Wednesday on Chennai Bypass in Tambaram.
The bulls were then taken to Blue Cross's shelter in Velachery, where they are being taken care of. Dawn Williams, General Manager of Blue Cross, said the office received a call from Prasad, a resident of Tambaram about the cattle being taken in a truck. The heads of some of the animals were dangling outside.
He pursued the truck in an attempt to stop it. Meanwhile, Mr. Williams and Raghav, a volunteer headed to the spot on information. They also informed personnel at Tambaram police station. In a joint operation, they managed to stop the vehicle before it could travel on GST Road towards Tiruchi.
Enquiries revealed that the bulls were loaded on the truck, bearing a Madurai registration number on the night of January 29 somewhere on the border between Andhra Pradesh and Orissa and were headed to be slaughtered in Kerala. The bulls travelled for a full three days before being rescued on Wednesday midnight.
A case under Section 429 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was registered. Balasubramaniam (57) of Dindigul, the lorry driver was arrested, while the vehicle's cleaner was let off. Tambaram police said investigations were on to find out who had hired the truck and to whom the bulls were to be handed over.
Mr.Williams said that due to dehydration and exhaustion, some bulls collapsed. After arriving at the shelter, the bulls drank a huge quantity of water, indicating their dehydration levels. They were given hay, groundnut and cottonseed cakes ('punnakku') and wheat and rice bran ('thavudu').
The bulls were aged between 7 and 12 and weighed around 300 kg. Tambaram police preliminary investigations indicate that the bulls might have been purchased on rock bottom prices and that some of them could have been even stolen. Numbers were painted on each of the bull's head. Further investigations were on to trace the supplier and the buyer and added that the manner in which the bulls were transported was a clear violation of laid down norms.
