Vallalar speaks about the Transcendent God ' ARUTPERUMJOTHY'( beyond form, name and identity) in all his songs from the first to the sixth thirumurai.
- Such a God is beyond the conception of samayam and matham(religion and philosophy).
- However that Transcendent God is best understood by human beings only when name and form are given to his power of grace.
- We understand a person by his kunam( trait) Vallalar uses such forms and names known to us already and explains them as the manifestations of Almighty God. Keeping this in mind if you read songs 718 and 995, you will find that they are more or less similar to songs 18(Vithiyaki ariyaki..) and 4(Vetanta nilayaki) of Maha Deva Malai.
- The difference in summing up the appeal in those songs is with reference to the context or the pathikam.
- An exact word by word meaning is available in page 151-153 and page 321 of the 9th volume of Thiru Arutpa moolamum uraiyum by Avvai Duraisamy.
- So let us read first to sixth thirumurai and understand what Vallalar means
Vallalar says that before the onset of 12 years of age God revealed to him the truth of religion ( see vinnappam)and so it is clear that he would not have meant that he laid emphasis on any one religion.
What is more we must remember that Vallalar was given specific command by God Almighty to carry out three important tasks and he would not shatter the faith of any individual. Remember his description of God as "arivar ariyum vannangalum...akiya kadavul" in vinnappam".
The name of the devotee who wrote this brief summary is not known. This was published along with Arutpa much later than 1885. It was not edited or approved by Vallalar as in the case of Songs.
Similarly all brief notings in urainadai pakuthi were written by different devotees on different occasions and copied by others and some were written by those who learnt from persons who were actually present in the meeting. Some are specific replies to some individuals and some are general observations. They were all collected, compiled, edited, grouped, given appropriate headings and printed along with Songs of Arutpa. So as is the practice accepted by learned scholars all these are to be accepted subject to Vallalar's words.
I request all the devotees to carefully go through the detailed editorial comments of A. Balakrishna Pillai for each one of his 12 volumes and.the footnotes for each pathikam.
