first of all what do you mean by a driver in a self automotive ? i do not understand what you are trying to say here .
let us assume ourselves as an atma the driver in the vehicle which we are driving .how do you say that the atman the driver is not in control of the vehicle. if it is not in control your car would have crashed on any pavement long time .It is driving well but it does not know whether to go to a temple or a pub ( just for a joke ) i am using this analogy to this context. The path to be taken is still there in your atmans hands the driver. if you drive well and slowly you will see the directions on the path which will show you the right directions to the path i mean to god .These sign boards which we see in our way which directs us will be gurus who would pass away once the direction is shown to us . I guess i am answering to the point .

Someone outside, somebody external, only can exert force to set it in motion/in action and then only I can steer it to, orient it to, anywhere towards my goal. That being so the ultimate force or the ultimate helper could none other than the GOD or the GURU that can exert force, the so called Grace, Love whatsoever it may be, to help me the driver to orient my march towards HIM. Therefore the only way for seekers of reality/Truth/Ultimate is to seek the help of GURU or the GOD himself to set me in motion, for it is the force at higher potential alone that can move/or redeem that one wriggling within its garrison with limited lower potential, locked up in Asudha Maya or Suddha Maya. That is why always Nature keeps it always available an enlightened Master of highest calibre among the homo sapiens, the humanoid, throughout the time/space existence to garner the thirsty seekers to the Godhead/Domain of Purity. Therefore, what I feel is seek GOD to find your GURU of highest calibre and such time be prayerful to GOD. May reality dawn upon you all.
