I have planned to begin a program on my blog: wwwjanakumnet.blogspot.com, a presentation 'ThirukkuRaL - a sonnet a day'. The first issue appears to-day as an attachment to this email, both in MS Word text and deskPDF formats. The text also appears in full herein below. I am selectivey choosing some vital verses from ThirukkuRaL, adding fesh thoughs and ideas in elaboration of what I had published earlier in book forms in Thamizh and English starting from 1998, in the light of experience and knowledge gained in the past years. I would invite your kind participation in the form of opinions, comments, criticism and questions for clarifications and sharing of thoughts. I look forward to your kind participation and encouragement on this front. Thanking you and with all good wishes Yours affably J.Narayanasamy ¿¡Ùõ ´Õ ¾¢ÕìÌÈû- ThirukkuRaL: A sonnet a day ¾¢ÕìÌÈû 2000 ¬ñθÙìÌõ ÓüÀð¼ ÀƨÁÂ¡É áø. ºÁÂì §¸¡ðÀ¡Î¸ÙìÌ «ôÀ¡üÀðÎ ¯Ä¸ ÓبÁìÌõ ´òÐÅÃìÜÊ šú쨸 ÅÆ¢¸¡ðÊ. ¾Á¢Æ¢Éò¾¢ý ¦¾¡ý¨ÁÂ¡É ¿¡¸Ã¢¸ò¨¾Ôõ, ÀñÀ¡ð¨¼Ôõ ´Ç¢ÃöÐ, ¯ûÇ¼í¸¢Â «È¢Å¡üÈø, ºÓ¾¡ÂÅ¢Âø, Áì¸û§¿Âõ, ¿Ä¢ó§¾¡÷ ¿ÄÅ¡ú×, ¦ÀñÏâ¨Á §À¡ýÈ Åü¨Èô §À¡üÚÅÐ. KuRaL 1 Like a mirror reflecting the light of images, knowledge of the mind and inner wisdom of the soul are reflected in our deeds and expressions. Seers and seniors of sublime qualities and grace bestow traditional benediction on the worthy. The magnificence of Primordial Matter (the concept of Almighty) transcends our vision and is beyond praise. No tradition is known in Thamizh of the ordinary blessing the high and mighty. The vocabulary adopted in KuRaL, like reverence (vaNakkam), adherence ( vazipAdu), glorifying (poutRal ), worship (thozhukai) appear more apt in the fitness of things to adore the virtuous, the peerless savants and pure benefactors. According to Thamizh tradition, the Sun (pakalavan) has been the known source of light and all energy sustaining life ( gnAyiRu), and the first among the solar system (Aathavan). The words Pakavan and Aathi muthalvan denote the core atom of matter that constituted the Universe (Andam) It is noteworthy, Saint ILangkovadikaL, commenced the preface of epic Silappathikaaram in praise of the Sun, the Moon and Rain. Classification of primordial matter as Space ( idam, veLi ), Universe (vuuzhi, aNdam,) the suspended stellar and solar systems ( gnAlangkaL), the sky (viN, visumbu, vAnam), the moving planets ( kouLkaL), the revolving & rotating earth (ulaku, vaiYam), and the elements (buuthangkaL) contained in space viz: air ( vaLi, kaatRu), fire (thee), water (neer) and land (nilam, maN); their qualities, configurations, movements and consequential effects were known in depth to the bare eyed scientists of ancient Thamiz Naadu in the centuries well before Christ. Their civilization was well matured and cultured in identifying the world of lands and seas as continents, nations, cities, and the country side as habitats ( vuur ), colonies (kompai) and hamlets ( saeri ); and a finer distinction between house (manai) and home (veedu, illam ). Societies comprised of kith and kin, clan and professional castes, friends and comrades. The dream of splitting the atom was ingrained in their imagination, to encompass seven seas within the core of atom (ThiruvaLLuva maalai) ; the idea to split the core of the atom into thousandths (Thirumanthiram) portrays the beauty and sophistication of a sharp intellect. That civilization had setbacks due to natural disasters and historical reasons of occupation and forced interaction of alien concepts based on religious thoughts, which shattered the coherence, realism and confidence of the people by the burden of ideas on instability. But its innate culture has survived from total obliteration (as had happened to ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations) thanks to the sustaining influence of its rich language and literature, a mainstay of its past traditions. Movements for renaissance and rationalistic thoughts have started to grow in the 20th century, to revive and refurbish ancient values as guides for the future, in tune with modern scientific trends. In the words of Saint Vedhadri, for those who have matured thinking, the path of enlightened wisdom is the best; for others true religion should be a guide to disciplined life. Dr.S.Radhakrishnan has stated that simple humanism free from blind dogmas and stale customs, is pure religion. There is no religion above compassion truth. | | | | |
