From Karthigai Deepam To Thai Poosam

Dear Seekers of Truth

"Ignorant of Grace, ignorant of Self, never once

Would ever one knows the Truth, said so oh Lord

Realm of Grace alone is the realm of Attainment

See the Realm of Truth for ever, said so oh Lord"

                                                            Vallalar in Aghaval (lines 993-997)

Those who know astrology can appreciate that the twelve signs of the zodiac correspond to twelve Tamil months beginning with chithrai ( April 14 of any year), analogous to Aries (mesha). It is pertinent to note that in Aries (mesha) sun is exalted but Saturn gets debilitated. In Taurus (Rishaba) moon is exalted and no planet is debilitated there. In Gemini (Mithuna), there is neither exaltation nor debilitation for any planet. In Cancer (Kataka), Jupiter is exalted but Mars is debilitated. In Leo (Simha), there is neither exaltation nor debilitation. In Virgo (Kanni), Mercury is exalted but venus is debilitated. In Libra (Thula), Saturn is exalted but sun is debilitated. In Scorpio (Vrischik), no planet is exalted but moon is debilitated. In Sagittarius (Dhanush), there is neither exaltation nor debilitation for any planet. In Capricorn (makara), Mars is exalted but Jupiter is debilitated. In Aquarius (Kumbha), there is neither exaltation nor debilitation for any planet. In Pisces (Meena), venus is exalted but mercury is debilitated. The exaltation and debilitation in the twelve signs of the zodiac have been tabulated for the purpose of convenient appreciation;

Sign              Month                      Exaltation                      Debilitation

Mesha         Chitrai                            Sun                               Saturn

Rishaba       Vaikasi                          Moon                             Nil

Mithuna        Aani                              Nil                                  Nil

Kataka          Aadi                             Jupiter                           Mars

Simha           Avani                            Nil                                  Nil

Kanni           Puratassi             Mercury                         Venus

Thula            Iyppassi                     Saturn                            Sun

Vrichika        Karthikai                    Nil                                   Moon

Dhanus        Markali                           Nil                                  Nil

Makara        Thai                               Mars                              Jupiter

Kumbha       Maasi                            Nil                                  Nil

Meena          Panguni              Venus                           Mercury

Therefore, it is evident from the above, one can appreciate that whenever a planet is in exaltation (uccha) then immediately it is balanced by another planet in debilitation (neecha). But in the case of moon, there is exaltation in Taurus but no planet is debilitated there and the moon is in debilitation in Scorpio but no planet is in exaltation there. It is an extraordinary situation unique to Rishaba and vrischik. It is significant to note that Taurus and Scorpio are the natural second and eighth sign of the zodiac and they are also the second and eighth house signifying the concept of eight and two in some other way.

When the sun transits in the sign of Scorpio that is in Karthik month and the moon transits in Rohini star in the sign of Taurus, Karthigai deepam is lit on the hills of Thiruvannamalai. This is one jyothi. The full moon in Karthik month is celebrated as fullness of mind which occurs in Rohini Star which is supposed to be the brightest of all the twenty seven stars in the zodiac. The deepam lit above the Thiruvannamalai represents fullness of mind. The mind standing in debilitation in Karthik month looks at its own fullness in the form of Karthik pournami. Then the mind reflects on the question as to how it was in full brilliance initially and why it has lost its brilliance and reduced to the state of darkness.

Karuvooraar, one of the 18 Siddhas would sing:

Why moon in full diminished in light

Find out the reason………………..

Therefore, karthik month is said to be the month of wakefulness for the souls slumbering on the couch of material wealth. The pilgrims seeking realization of truth progress on this path from Vrischik jyothi to another jyothi which is being lit as Makara jyothi when devotees of Lord Iyyappa undertook pilgrimage. But it was initially the day of second jyothi was on the date of Thai poosam.

Vallalar  put the lamp outside for worship only in the month of Karthigai in 1873 at Mettukuppam Siddhi valakam.

The zodiac is represented as the human face. Mesha with exalted sun is considered as the right eye and Rishaba  with the exalted moon is considered as the left eye. However, even though sun is exalted in Mesha, it also happens to be the sign of debilitation of Saturn, importance was given to the left eye represented by Rishaba where the exaltation of moon remains untainted by any debilitation. In the name of Diksha, the left eye is being identified as the abode of god without understanding the real significance of the symbolic representation of truth behind. This full moon occurring in the month of Karthik at the star of Rohini is represented as the left breast of Uma, the breast of wisdom which no one has yet suckled. That is why Thiruvannamalai is being circumambulated in every full moon day in general and karthikai purnami in particular to have the feed from the breast of wisdom by Siddhas.

There are two types of jyothis. One occurs in the sign of Kataka in the month of Thai in the star of Poosam which is the star of Saturn.  Another occurs in the sign of Rishaba in Karthik month in the star of Rohini which is the star of moon. Actually Vallalar was preparing for his deaterialisation into deathless immortality from Karthikai Deepam and it culminated in Thai poosam. We may recall that the guideline for prayer at Siddhivalakgam  dated 4.12.1873 records that in "1873 Karthikai 20, Thursday, Vallalar placed the lamp out which was kept since inside the room for his prayers and said

"You pay obeisance to this lamp continuously without any interval…..I am going to close the doors….I am in this body now. Hereafter I would step into the constitution of all beings."

The last commandment of the saint was dated 30.1.1874

"I am going to be in isolation inside for ten or fifteen days. Do not get the feeling of disbelief by seeing inside. If somehow happens to see, it would not be revealed to anyone as god would keep it only as an empty house. He would not disclose my presence."

We all know that the saint is beyond any falsity and exaggeration and His utterance always remains Truth. Therefore, Vallalar need not have told that he was going to be within that room for ten to fifteen days. If he was to make the exit within an hour after the closure of the door, then there was no necessity for the saint to utter that even if somebody happens to see inside, his presence would not be felt by the grace of god as the room would be made empty by the Almighty. It is evident from the above, that the saint was inside the room for more than ten days undertaking the spiritual journey.

Vallalar speaks about thirteen steps (Thrayodasa Nilai) to the state of Divine Grace as noted below:

1.Bootha Nilai

2.Karana Nilai

3.Pirakrithi Nilai

4.Mohini Nilai

5.Asuddha Maya Nilai

6.Asuddha Maha Maya Nilai

7.Suddha Maya Nilai

8.Suddha Maha Maya Nilai

9.Sarva Maha Maya Nilai

10.Kundali Nilai

11.Piranava Nilai

12.Parikkiraka Nilai

13.Thiruvarul Nilai

Every day after the doors at Siddhivalakam were closed on 30.1.1873, the saint crossed one state each day and on the 13 the day, Vallalar was released to Thiruvarul Nilai equivalent to the geostationary orbit of a space craft. Just as a cosmonaut reaches the space after discarding modules in different stages, so also the spiritual journey to immortality involves discarding several modules. Therefore, if the saint entered into isolation on 30.1.1874, he attained that state on the 13 th day ie on 12.2.1874. Vallalar was inside the room working out the disintegration and emerging into reintegration elsewhere. The saint having rehearsed the process several time beforehand, was already conversant with the method. Now like the arrow released from the bow, there was an atomic explosion rather an atomic expansion where the immense energy released in micro neutrinos enveloped all the beings of this cosmos before the soul plummeted onto the lap of the Almighty. That is what the saint meant when he declared that within an hour he would be launched to the first state of Bootha Nilai from where the journey of 12 days was to commence to eternity which could be astrologically understood as stated below;

1.         Bootha Nilai                                    Mesha                 First Day

2.         Karana Nilai                                       Rishaba               Second Day

3.         Pirakrithi Nilai                                     Mithuna               Third Day

4.         Mohini Nilai                                        Kataka                 Fourth Day

5.         Asuddha Maya Nilai                         Simha                  Fifth Day

6.         Asuddha Maha Maya Nilai              Kanni                   Sixth Day

7.         Suddha Maya Nilai                           Thula                   Seventh Day

8.         Suddha Maha Maya Nilai                 Vrichika              Eighth Day

9.         Sarva Maha Maya Nilai                    Dhanus               Nineth Day

10.       Kundali Nilai                                       Makara                Tenth day

11.       Piranava Nilai                                     Kumbha               Eleventh Day

12.       Parikkiraka Nilai                                 Meena                 Twelfth Day

               Thiruvarul Nilai

                                (State of Divine Grace)

The saint affirms that

"the state of Divine Grace spreads in the alphabet, form and name. These could be discerned when the veils of parity take leave".

The saint is positive that

"Moreover, these could not be learnt by any education".

The saint also prescribes the method

"Then, how to know them is as follows: When Morality fills and there is incarnation of compassion, contemplative inquiry creeps in and then, the character of humbling ourselves sets in motion".

The saint asserts how consciousness could bloom

"In that state, the force of Divine Grace makes the imprint and consequently consciousness blossoms."

It is like the dried shreds of cotton fibre which on blooming absorb humidity in the atmosphere. This world would have been much better in the absence of so many religions and so many philosophies. Vallalar takes us to the pristine state where there was no religion and no philosophy. It is where Peace prevails on the ground of oneness and Truth remains without any exaggeration by way of any alphabet, form and name.

"Blessing with light to knowledge without teaching

Building basic to my basis, Glory of Glowing Grace"

Vallalar in Aghaval (23-24)
