:: The Project

Thiruvasagam - a classical crossover is a unique attempt to present the Thiruvasagam in a musical form, synthesising ideas from both the Indian and Western classical traditions. One of the main objectives of this project is to bring to the attention of the youth, such masterpieces from India's rich yet forgotten spiritual traditions. In this project selected verses from Thiruvasagam are set to tune with a symphony orchestra providing the backing.

:: The Musical Team

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja scored the music for this grand project. The project involved more than 200 musicians from India and Hungary, including the Budapest Symphony Orchestra conducted by Laszlo Kovacs. The English translation of the selected verses was done by Mr. Stephen Schwartz, the Oscar award winning lyricist of Pocahontas and Prince of Egypt. The final mastering was be done by Richard King, the 2004 Grammy winner for the Best Engineered Album in the Classical category.

:: About the composer

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja is a living musical legend and composer par excellence. Since 1976 the Maestro has composed original scores for over 800 movies in six different languages. Ilaiyaraja has also composed several instrumental albums, the most notable ones being How To Name It and Nothing But Wind. Winner of the national "Best Film Music Composer" award on three occasions, Ilaiyaraja has also received numerous other awards honoring his contributions to music.

:: About the Thiruvasagam

Thiruvasagam is a set of 51 divinely inspired verses composed by the Shaivaite Saint Manickavasagar. The special significance of the Thiruvasagam is its poetic beauty and the profound emotion it creates while just reading the verses. There is a saying in Tamil that if the Thiruvasagam isn't going to move you, nothing else will (thiruvAsakathukku urukAthAr oruvAsakathukkum urugAr).

:: Tamil Maiyam

The Thiruvasagam in Symphony project is coordinated by Tamil Maiyam a registered non-profit tax-exempt organization in India. Tamil Maiyam was founded in Chennai, India, in July 2002 by Rev. Jegath Gaspar Raj and his friends as a organization to promote Tamil arts, Literature and Culture with special thrust on Research, Creative productions and Publications as well as to bring the fruits of modern science to the ordinary Tamils and to create a platform for Tamils living in various parts of the world to interact, relate, learn and work together for the betterment of Tamil language and Tamil society
